Das Boot (TV series)

A big disappointment. The 1980s movie of the same name was a tale of German submariners operating out of a French submarine base in WWII. This series is based on other stories by the same author.  The tale of a dysfunctional, but nevertheless effective, submarine crew is fascinating. The problem with the series is that they padded out the story with a ridiculous side plot involving an Alsatian translator with conflicted loyalties and a female French resistance leader with “issues.”  The side plot takes up entirely too much time, and ruined the series for me.  Even Tom Wlaschina (Jaqen H’ghar in GoT), who gives a fine performance as a surprisingly urbane but nevertheless monstrous Gestapo officer, can’t save this turkey.  On Hulu.
