The first season of this show about a small but very odd German town began with a suicide and a disappeared child, and got darker from there. The second season, which resolved some of the unfinished threads from the first season but introduces new ones, nevertheless manages to be a bit hopeful, with even a bit of humor (Gretchen the time traveling dog). The three main story lines follow the town in three time periods – the present, the 1980s, and the 1950s. I was fascinated by this portrait of a changing Germany, from the really dark days right after WWII to the modern, forward-looking society it is today. The characters are really interested, even if the convoluted story lines sometimes don’t make sense. I recommend binge watching this series, though, so you can keep track of things.
